The reason many people go on a detox is to look for a quick fix or to help undue some “damage” they have done by over drinking and/or eating. It’s important to note that our bodies have very good natural detoxifiers such as our lymphatic system, liver and kidneys. Toxins get broken down naturally in our bodies and get eliminated when we sweat, breathe and use the bathroom.
Going on a detox may help you eat more foods with higher amounts of nutrients such as lemons, colourful fruits & vegetables but there are also many things to be cautious of.
Most detox diets are very low in calories, forcing you to starve yourself, which leads you feeling extremely low in energy. Several detox juices may have nitrates in them. Nitrates cause your blood vessels to enlarge, which is the reason why some people get headaches in the process. If you’re doing a juice cleans that involves lots of fruit, this may lead to blood sugar levels being unstable. Detox diets may also trigger imbalances of electrolytes due to drinking lots of liquids and eliminating foods that have salt.
Some tips to naturally reduce toxins in your body
1) Exercise to get your blood flowing and eliminate toxins through your sweat
2) Be aware of the skin/hair/beauty products you use as many cosmetics contain chemicals.
