Sodium is an essential nutrient that our bodies require in small amounts but too much salt in the diet can lead to increased health risks. The recommended daily intake is ~1,500mg – 2,300 mg/day at max.
It’s important to realize that most of the sodium we consume is not from the salt that we add to our foods but rather from all of the processed foods that we eat. When we consume too much sodium, our kidneys work to get rid of it and we excrete it out through our urine. However, when our kidneys aren’t working at optimal levels, our bodies hold on to that sodium which leads to swelling (aka bloating).
Consuming foods that are high in potassium can help the extraction of sodium into the urine. Eating a diet rich in vitamins, minerals, whole nutrient dense foods, limiting processed foods such as canned/packed items, eating out at restaurants, deli meats ect, can help to reduce sodium levels as well.
Himalayan pink salt is actually one of the healthier options to use.
Benefits include:
The colour pink is a representation of high iron.
It is filled with minerals and includes 84 essential nutrients that are needed by our bodies.
It can help with reducing muscle cramps and managing healthy pH levels.
