Many people think they MUST consume sugary foods but there is a reasoning behind cravings. Chemicals in our brain get released when we consume foods that are higher in sugar and fat. These chemicals are called opioids, which attach to the part of our brain known as the reward center giving us a sense of pleasure. Dopamine, which is our feel-good hormone, also gets produced. The explanation as to why craving occur, why we experience withdrawal symptoms and why some people binge to the point where they feel sick is due to neurological changes that have been made in our brain.

Sugar is addicting and trigger the same chemicals when heroin and morphine are used. The feelings people get when they eat that food they have been craving is the similar feeling that occurs to drug addicts when they get high. Many people turn to food or drugs as a way of coping with pain or other issues that are occurring in their life. They turn to food and/or drugs to get that “feel good” feeling.

When you begin to eat whole foods and eliminate processed foods, your cravings will naturally begin to diminish.
