Not getting sufficient sleep has an impact on your hormones, metabolism and your hunger.
Hormones that have an effect on sleep:
Ghrelin – is responsible for telling your brain to eat. Your body makes more ghrelin when you lack sufficient sleep.
Leptin – tells your body it’s time to stop eating. When you don’t get enough sleep, leptin levels decrease, therefore you end up eating MORE.
Cortisol – which is known as the stress hormone tends to spike when you don’t get enough sleep. We don’t want cortisol levels to be high at this time as this leads to you being awake and alert.
Insulin – converts sugars and starches into energy, and when you don’t get enough sleep, your body doesn’t respond as well to insulin.
It’s important to get at least 7 hours of sleep each night!
